Breast Reduction Q&A

What is breast reduction surgery?

Breast reduction surgery, or mammaplasty, removes excess fat and tissue from the breasts. The goal of surgery is to create an appearance that’s more proportional to the rest of your body. Breast reduction surgery can also help eliminate back and neck pain from disproportionately large breasts.

Should I consider breast reduction surgery?

Large, heavy breasts can lead to chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain that interferes with your normal activities. Breasts that are too large for your body shape may even lead to skin rashes from trapped moisture or shoulder grooves from tight bra straps.

Whether you’re struggling to exercise or simply don’t feel comfortable having large breasts, you may be an ideal candidate for breast reduction surgery.

Am I a good candidate for breast reduction surgery?

The medical, cosmetic, and emotional toll of having overly large breasts can impact your self-esteem. Dr. Bouzaglou may recommend breast reduction surgery if you:

  • Are in good overall health
  • Don’t smoke or use tobacco
  • Have overly large, heavy breasts
  • Cannot exercise properly because of your breast size
  • Have skin rashes beneath your breasts
  • Experience chronic neck or back pain

During your consultation, Dr. Bouzaglou takes your medical history, current health concerns, and expectations into account when recommending breast reduction surgery.

Is breast reduction surgery covered by insurance?

Many insurance providers do cover breast reduction surgery for patients experiencing chronic pain from overly large breasts. After a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Bouzaglou, contact your insurance provider to find out if you’re covered for breast reduction surgery.

What happens during breast reduction surgery?

After administering a local anesthetic and oral sedation, Dr. Bouzaglou makes incisions in your breasts to access the excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue. She may make a circular, T-shaped, or keyhole incision around the areola. The technique she uses depends on your individualized treatment plan.

Next, Dr. Bouzaglou removes any excess fat or tissue. Depending on the amount of fat you have inside your breasts, she may include liposuction in this step. Finally, Dr. Bouzaglou repositions the tissue, removes excess skin, and lifts the nipple into a higher position.
