Breast Augmentation Q&A

What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a procedure that modifies the shape or size of your breasts with implants or fat transfer. Though this surgical procedure primarily increases the breast size, it can also correct asymmetrical breasts and those that have lost volume from pregnancy or weight loss.

Dr. Bouzaglou can achieve your desired results through traditional smooth saline or silicone breast implants, or through fat transfer. After a comprehensive breast augmentation consultation, she can recommend the right method for you.

Am I a good candidate for breast augmentation?

Dr. Bouzaglou works with you to ensure your expected results align with your goals. She may recommend breast augmentation for you if you:

  • Are in overall good health
  • Are unhappy with having small breasts
  • Have lost breast volume from childbirth or weight loss
  • Are not pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Have asymmetrical breasts
  • Have abnormally shaped breasts
  • Have elongated breasts

During your consultation, Dr. Bouzaglou asks you detailed questions regarding your concerns and expectations to develop a realistic individualized treatment plan.

What are the different types of breast implant surgery?

There are several types of breast augmentation surgery, including:

Silicone implants

Silicone is a sturdy material that provides a realistic look and feel of natural breast tissue. If damaged, silicone implants aren’t likely to collapse like less durable implant materials.

Saline implants

Saline implants use a mixture of salt and water to mimic the natural shape of the breasts. These implants are firmer, more consistent, and rounder than silicone implants, but also less durable. If a saline implant becomes damaged, it can collapse and flatten.

Gel implants

Also called gummy bear implants, this gel material offers a smooth, cohesive consistency that mimics the texture of natural breast tissue.

Fat transfer augmentation

A fat transfer augmentation involves removing fat from one area of your body, such as the hips, buttocks, or thighs, and injecting it into the breasts for a natural-looking shape.

What is recovery like after breast augmentation?

It can take about four to six weeks to recover from breast augmentation surgery, during which time Dr. Bouzaglou may recommend wearing compression bandages to protect your incisions. You can expect swelling, soreness, and bruising for a few weeks after surgery.

Strenuous exercise during this time can interfere with your recovery. Dr. Bouzaglou schedules regular follow-up visits with you while you recover to determine when you can increase your activity levels.
